patient treatment planning pain management electronic medical record surgery data collection researchThe surgical team at OSMH is incorporating evidenced-based practices into the care plans for Patients who present with Fractured Hips. This work will continue to align with Ontario Health’s proposed Fracture Hip Standards. There will be direct review of conventional modalities with/without the use of fascia/iliac blocks related to patient outcomes. Outcomes directly reviewed will be pain control, functional outcomes related to early mobilization, delirium incidence and overall length of hospital stay.
Expected Outcomes & Deliverables: The anticipated outcomes are that with combined patient treatment (medication regimen/fascia iliac blocks) patients will have an improved surgical experience. With early/focused treatment (pre-surgery) patients will have improved pain control, improved functional outcomes, decreased delirium and decreased length of hospital stay. Students will engage with literature, data and patient experience and aligned to best practice. Student data will be extrapolated to directly support the Fractured Hip Optimization project.
Student Involvement: Students can focus on research/best practice work, data collection (pain modalities/mobility/delirium/LOS), and support education planning around best practice directly tied to patient outcomes. Remote work is available, as well as opportunities to engage directly with patients, families, and staff. Students can also report at Surgical care team and/or the optimization project table, if able.
Resources required (if any): Access to Cerner Applications/EMR and other hospital records as needed for data collection.
Support Offered to Students – Students could access Clinical manager/Quality Experience Leader for support if/when required (weekly/biweekly or as needed meetings). Other supports will be from the team that supports Fracture Hip optimization project.
